Kennel SNOWPUG - Pugs in North Norway

"You haven`t live - before you have been living with a pug"

Norway's northernmost FCI registered pug breeder

Kennel Snowpug - who are we?

On this page there will be some information about me, about kennel Snowpug, the intention of my breeding and how it all started.

The picture is of me, "Klara" and "Alexander" on a great 5 hour autumn trip in the mountains where we live in Balsfjord county - September 2019.

Me and my pugs thrive best out in the nature and then preferably in the mountains. Even though I have pugs, they can do without problems, nice long walks of 8 hours with breaks (of course this comes with training and with grown dogs).

I believe that healthy dogs are happy dogs - and by being out in nature, the dogs get the opportunity to unfold freely in rough terrain - which is very good for the physical health.

The dogs pedigree name:

Kennel Snowpug

Kennel SNOWPUG is a small pug-kennel (black- and fawn pugs) in North-Norway and the Snowpug family consist of our belowing pugs, my son Tor-Gunnar (born 27. January 1993) and my self (Mona).

My son doesn`t live with me but a few miles away. He always helps me when needed and are looking after the dogs when I`m traveling. Tor-Gunnar has a couple of pugs living with him.

We live in a commune called Balsfjord in Troms county. As some orientation this is by driving a car: 1 hour from Tromsoe city, about 1 hour from Kilipsjarvi in Finland, around 7 hours from Piteaa in Sweden.

Kennel Snowpug is approved and registered in the FCI and the Norwegian Kennel Club. We are also registered in Norwegian Pug Dog Club and are hereby obliged to follow the breed club's and Norwegian Kennel Club`s recommendations, guidelines and requirements within breeding.

I received my officially breeding name Kennel Snowpug 16th. November 2005 and our first Snowpug litter was born 01. March 2007 after my pugs: Pugbully Joan Baez and Borzan`s Phantor Girls Favorite

Why I choose Snowpug as a Kennel name:

My birthplace is Tromsoe in North-Norway and my hometown is Tennes in Balsfjord county. Since my roots are from Northern Norway and there are very many snow months in the north - the choice to find the right breeding name was not difficult - SNOWPUG - represents pugs, the place I grew up and the snow.

The intention in my breeding is both the mental and the physical within the pug as a breed. I only breed on dogs that are healthy that hold the standard for use in breeding. And my goal is to breed pretty, breed-type, healthy and happy pugs with a nice and lovely temperament.

In my eyes, the health is the most important thing in breeding on the pugs. But of course, I will always breed on breed-typical and good individuals so that I have the best starting point to produce healthy & happy puppies that people can come to enjoy for many years. In my breeding program I am very focused on achieving my goals: the breed construction, the health (physical as well as mental), temperament, anatomy and genetics.

As a breeder I am genuinely interested in the pug (and dogs in general) and I try to do my best to achieve my goals in a positive way for the breed and this is best achieved by staying up to date and being open to input and comments.

All the dogs in our family lives with me in our house, they are with me 24/7, short told, they have acsess to the hole house and they are all equal family-members!

My son, Tor-Gunnar, has been raised with dogs - this because there have been dogs in his life since he was born. Tor-Gunnar was 9 years old in 2002 when we got our first pug - NO CH Borzan`s Phantor Girls Favorite - and after that he has always had pugs in his life.

Now he lives for himself with his girlfriend and his 2 pugs - "Scott" & "Ruth" - Snowpug's U will Never be Alone & Snowpug`s Ruth Rock`s It All, these 2 pugs are siblings but from 2 different litters. "Scott" is a "cuddly dog" and is very happy with this - "Ruth" got her litter 29. November 2019 - our X-litter - where we kept the male - Snowpug`s Xtra Special Dream "Oscar" (he is named after our first pug).

Tor-Gunnar is fantastic with all the dogs and he has a special bond to each of them, not least he has an incredible amount of knowledge. I am incredibly grateful to have him and his great interest in dogs. Without him, it would have been difficult for me to travel the way I do - as he always looks after the dogs and helps me when needed.

The start....

From I was only around four years old I have been VERY interested in the pugs. My parents told me that I very often used to sit with a dog book about "All the dogs of the world" - and the page with pug was almost completely worn out after all my kisses in the pictures.

I grew up with dogs and they have throughout in my life been a big part of my everyday life - and I can not actually imagine a life without a dog - especially pugs - they are "happy pills" on 4 legs!

When I was little, my parents had a lovely Boxer female named "Kara", she was my nanny and playmate. Here, the foundation was "born" for my genuine interest in the flat nosed dogs. After a lot of hassle (which only a child can get), when I was 10 year old, I got my first dog. This was a Phalene female and was called "Esmeralda". With this dog I went to several obedience and agility courses and we had great fun for 10 years.

My parents have told me afterwards that it was absolutely impossible to get pug in Norway in the early 1980s. They wanted to give me a pug - but there were no one to be found in our country.

So this had to wait until I had the opportunity to look for the pug that I wanted. I spent my time well and waited for many years to look for the right breeder who had the intentions I had in my mind.

I searched information about the breed in many years before I was getting my own pug. I was doing this because I wanted to now and learn as much as possible about the breed, their health, temperament, sickness etc.

When I was coming to the point when I thought I was ready to get my own pug, I took contact with Janet and Stig Holm/Borzan`s kennel in Sweden. I was taking contact with them because they have the pugs I were looking for and not least they had the same breed intentions as me.

In November 2002 I was travelling to pick up my boy which I have been waiting fore so long - almost 2 years!!! When I saw - Borzan`s Phantor Girls Favourite "Oscar" for my first time I couldn`t do anything about cry - he was so sweet and I just loved him at the first sight. My dream was finally coming true!!

When I finally get my male I started the search after a female who would be suitable to "Oscar`s" pedigree. I get in touch with breeder Heidi Fridtjosen/Pugbully Kennel  in Trondheim, Norway - and in 2004 I get my first female - Pugbully Joan Baez "Sarah".

In the same year (2004) I imported a Finnish princess to Norway, Troppola Dark Denise "Denise", from Monika Kevin/Kennel Troppola in Helsinki, Finland.

These two females together with my male Oscar are the main features in my breeding - and my intention for the future was to build up under these bloodlines. Unfortunately we lost Sarah in a very complicated situation 24. June 2009 (actually on my birthday).

"Pugs are like candy - if you take one - you need more...."and this is so true!

The ground-foundation in my breeding

NO CH SE UH Borzan`s Phantor Girls Favorite - "Oscar"

I got my first pug in 2002 from Janet and Stig Holm/breeder Borzan`s in Sweden. "Oscar" was a long-desired male and he was borne 16.09.02. His parents was (father) NORD CH FIN CH NV-01 Kastanjan Lotus Lothar and (mother) SE CH NO CH NV-02 Klehaugens Gullvivan. Thank you so much Janet and Stig Holm for that you where trusting me this lovely boy!

"Oscar" was my main-stud male and he is the ground-foundation in my breeding. I have built up my kennel on "Oscar`s" bloodlines, he had every quality I was looking after in a pug and more!! I`m so incredibly grateful over the opportunity I had to have this lovely pug into my life and into my breeding. Without him, there wouldn`t have been any kennel Snowpug - it all started with this great pug - which became the basis of my great passion.

In January 2010 he had a trauma on the ice and sadly he get some squeezed nerves in his back which resulted in pains and sometimes paralysis in his both backfeets. The veterinarian tried the treatment they could offered him (at this time) and it worked for a little time - but in May/June he get worst and I had to take the hard decision to let him go. I decided to do this in my hometown in North-Norway (Tromsoe - this so he should have his last time at home with my hole family. It was extremely hard but this is the responsibility we have as animal owners - they should not suffer unnecessary .

This was very traumatic for me. Losing my "Diamond" - which I had wanted for so many years and which meant so much to me - at such a young age - was more than I could bear....

That I would lose my dearest pug because he slipped on a lump of ice was incomprehensible, sadly it was not possible to operate him - so it was right for him to let go of his suffering. Not least, he was the ALFA dog in the pack - and when he became ill it was obvious that he failed to maintain his status as the "matriarch" in the pack. Something I didn't think was right to expose him to. My prince "Oscar" was No. 1 and it should remain so, too.

You will always be with me in my heart and you live further on in your off-springs - rest in peace my dearest one

I will love you forever

Me and Snowpug`s Ingeborg Precious Girl "Ingeborg"

The picture is of me and Ingeborg. This dog was a "one of a kind dog" - and meant more to me than I have words to.

She was not only a dog, but my best friend and life companion. She was like a human being who completely understood me. I rarely needed to have her in leash, she was always by my side.

Because of that my little "Baby" struggled with endocrine disorders all her life, she never got puppies - which was a great sadness for me.

Unfortunately, due to its long-standing problems with the hormones, it developed into a very aggressive type of cancer. "Ingeborg" was operated and she was treated symptomatically for a couple of years - before eventually the disease made such great progress that I had to "let her go" in 2019 (only 9 years old).

This was very difficult and hard for me... The grief and emptiness after her was indescribable - but all the memories will forever be in my heart, soul & mind.

None of my dogs will ever suffer unnecessarily, no matter how painful it is for me to lose my precious little ones.. That's the downside of being a dog owner - we only have "our little treasures" on borrowed time.

My precious baby girl, my best friend, my soulmate & life-companion, my star, my LOVE, my everything - "Ingeborg" - born 03.05.2010 - passed away 11.10.2019.
